Tell us about yourself, your brand (business name, products you sell & services you provide, and the market you serve) and your email address
I am Miranda or Miri or Mini (I am a woman of many names) from Miami! I am the owner of a custom illustrated gifts small biz (Mini’s Design Studio) and also a full time law student. I love doing illustrations and portraits for people and enjoy putting all of my energy and love into them! In my store I focus on illustrated gifts, stickers + other home customized products with a family rich theme, so you can always have your loved ones close. I spend my free time when I am not drawing; reading, watching Netflix, and drinking wine!
What year did you start your business and what inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
I started two years ago but closed due to personal reasons and opened up again this January 2020. I have a passion for design and honestly just started as therapy for myself (as a way to deal with my anxiety) and it took off so I launched it as an online store.
How did you come to learn what you do? (self-taught, education, classes, books, mentors etc.)
I am self-taught with the occasional online course. I grew up with a super artistic mom and she continues to be the most creative person I know! She inspires me and is always giving me tips and ideas!
What has been the most rewarding phase of your career?
Now, as I have had more time to brainstorm and come up with new ideas. My store has blossomed into this wonderful place where I have been lucky enough to meet so many amazing people.
What is the most challenging part about being an entrepreneur?
The hardest part would be balancing all the hats I wear! As a small business owner, I am the CEO, CFO, and everything else in between! I also am a full time student, so it sometimes feels like 24 hours in a day is not enough!
What do you do for inspiration? Do you ever hit creative roadblocks and how do you overcome them?
At times I hit walls but I overcome them by talking to my other entrepreneur friends and scouring Pinterest, Instagram and Magazines just to get color and shape ideas. My “hometown” of Miami gives a lot of my inspiration for my art from the people and many cultures that make up this beautiful city.
What’s the secret to your success (personally/professionally/spiritually)?
Staying grounded and doing it for the love of the art instead of the money. The money is always nice but it is not my driving factor.
What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs just starting out? Do you have any tips or tricks you learned along the way that you’d like to share?
Just do it. Don’t panic about the small things you will have time to fix them later. I have failed many times, it's just part of the learning curve.
What do you think the #girlboss / creative female community needs right now?
Community is key. Make friends who will lift you and your business up. I have tried to make myself that person for other newcomers and seek out people who inspire you without bringing you down or making you feel insecure.
What are you working on now and what’s in store for your business this year?
I just launched my Holiday collection on November 1st and I am super excited about our custom ornaments. I am also working on a new mask collection for my shop that I cannot wait for people to see! I am hoping that 2021 is the year I can finally open up my website so we will see!
