The Key to Good Goal Setting
With the new year (new decade!) around the corner, we’ve been hearing a lot about goal setting, things people want to achieve and overall business planning. We love how amped our Printed Minters are to turn a new leaf and keep making strides in both their personal and professional lives. However, we see so many goal setting tips! Heck, we’ve shared our top ones over the years a lot — but today, we wanted to simplify the process for you + share our top trick to goal setting success. Hopefully this will bring you a little less stress during this busy season and set you on the fast track to the life of your dreams.
So what’s our number one goal setting secret?
Reverse Engineering. AKA finding “stepping stones.”
We’re visual learners so we physically draw a circle on a whiteboard with our ultimate goal in it, and then draw smaller circles below to represent the stepping stones. That being said, feel free to simply put this in a timeline layout with a straight line if that works the best for you.
Then, brainstorm a list of ideas that could help you achieve your “big” goal. Let this page be a braindump of ideas. Even if they don’t make it onto the official timeline, it’s good that you’ll be able to assess every possible option. Afterall, you may decide to change-up your stepping stones over time and sometimes it’s the least expected ideas that deliver the most favorable outcome.
Once you’ve made your brain dump page, take the stepping stones that make the most sense to add to your “ultimate goal” timeline. Then, start arranging them in chronological order. Following that, create 1-3 stepping stones for each of those stepping stones.
When your timeline is complete, make sure to schedule time to work on each of these things in your calendar and say “no” or outsource anything that needs to fall away. Afterall, goals have never been reached without a little give. Good luck!
